For a second, imagine yourself blind.
Then imagine you had to fend for yourself on the streets, with no friends or family to help you. Imagine trying to find a scrap of food, let alone competing for it when you can’t see. What if the cause behind the loss of your eyesight was the neglect of the family and friends once you had? What if you could still remember that?
For Sheila, a Husky who was brought to life at a pet shop, sold off like some commodity and finally dumped at the height of what was at some point a highly treatable case of conjunctivitis, this is exactly what happened.
She was bought by a family who kept her in their backyard in the sweltering heat of summer, disregarding her physical need and emotional longing for the northern climate. Sustained overheating for Sheila led to a host of health problems, as her immune system collapsed. First her fur, designed for insulation from the cold and not to deal with the heat, started to come off in large chunks. This was followed by a serious skin infection. As she lost her strength, her once blue and beautiful eyes deteriorated.
But, instead of getting her the medical treatment she needed and improving her conditions, her family just dumped her on the street.
Sheila roamed the streets for weeks, trying to survive but her the condition of her eyes continued to deteriorate. Even the shadowy silhouettes that gave her hints as to where to find food started disappearing. The world was getting darker; she closer to death with every passing day.
She was on the brink of starvation when a kind stranger found and brought her to He’Art of Rescue — and just look at her now!
